The sculpture by Dadave «Speakers’ Corner» has inspired Aventures des Toiles for a summer theme. This assembly of details was transposed onto garments for the 2016 collection, bringing along all the fantasy and richness drawn from the expressive content of the work of art.
Despite the outstanding ability of the artist in extracting and revealing contemporaneousness in his work, the atmosphere here is nostalgic and the style is vintage. Our fashion designers have successfully managed to capture Dadave’s spirit and render it onto models looking as if sculpted in matter, both colourful and modern.
As a first step, they selected diff erent fabrics for each part of the puzzle in hues which are alternately shiny, subtle and discreet. Then, they vetted each piece of serrated fabric for different aspects: granular, striated or smooth. The selected ensemble challenged their endless curiosity ultimately halting on pieces which could coordinate and eventually appeared in the original colours. Their eyes were captured by a blue electric wire linked to a glossy red diode and enlightened by a tiny coil of undetermined yellow texture.
During conception, Aventures des Toiles’ creative staff focused on this cryptic puzzle and selected fabrics and accessories with the most pertinent aspects and touches. Stylists then drew graphic prints recalling circuit boards or freely reinterpreted computer keyboards.
After having worked with press agencies in Paris in the 90’s, the artist DADAVE started his career making pieces of art from waste materials he gleaned on Paris’ pavements. In his workshop-garage he carefully gathers his precious rubbish, once used for purely industrial purposes.
From colour to black-and-white, from sculptures to art installations, his assemblages offer a new way of looking at everyday processed objects, once they have been completely removed from their initial use. Radios, TV sets or computers are all explored by this sorter/recycler who opens their viscera and allows them a second life.
He masters autopsy techniques and obsessively dissects his subjects. His filing operations are meticulous and methodically sequenced in order to classify all of the internal elements he has found – hundreds, sometimes thousands of them. After, he sometimes reproduces images which will one day become pieces of art. Produced from much time-consuming efforts, his «visual objects» include collage, repetition, and unlikely shapes.
Do you see yourself as a recycler-artist ?
I only use waste materials but I don’t necessarily fly a green flag. What inspires me is what the art work will show. I only pick up pieces that are interesting to me in order to make a work of art. I strive be extremely visual.
How did you start your work with electrical
When i started in Belleville, I used to work from all kinds of materials. I made sculptures from what I found in the streets. One day, I opened a TV set and discovered unbelievable bright, flashy colours. I don’t add any paint onto my creations: everything is original.
How do you «hunt» the interesting pieces?
Nowadays, I am competing with metal dealers who recycle copper, some gold and a few precious metals. Quite a lot of people know me by now so I also receive inventory from schools or companies. This allows companies to recycle without paying for it.
The older the better… But how are you going to deal with technological evolutions?
It might become a problem, but many objects haven’t been discarded yet, allowing many more opportunities. New connection technology leaves little to recycle, there is not much for me to take from a flat screen…. I have started to work with this kind of equipment though : I break the glass screen and liquid crystals are full of colours which I display on lit plates. This is still at an embryonic stage…
Madame Vagabonde is a particular tribute to fortune telling and card reading, offering the best in terms of grace and mysteriousness. The complex composition has given Aventures des Toiles the opportunity to create a graphically-rich theme, where a wealth of details and ornaments inevitably draws attention. In Brussels, where she has set up her workshop, Alice Caroll continuously gathers, transforms and diverts whatever she founds on her wanderings...This New Collection Including These 2 Dresses is Currently at Petunias of Naples!
